They only way you could have a betta and another fish in the same tank is to have a divider between the two.
Gourami and betta in same tank. Joined dec 25 2010 162 posts. Hi there betta and gourami belong to the anabantid family which means they can breathe oxygen out of the air as they have a labyrinth organ. And because of their peaceful personalities they are unlikely to be aggressive to your betta.
They are very aggressive fish and will attack any other fish in the same tank as they are. When you introduce a gourami fish to the tank it may hide out quite frequently until it gets used to the tank. Jump to latest follow 1 6 of 6 posts.
No you can t put betta s with any other kind of fish. Gourami fish are anti social. The larger the tank you have then the less aggression there will be because of how much space there will be for them and will make it easier to divert aggression.
It may do the same thing even after it has been in the tank awhile because it just likes to hide out. Gourami fish do so that s why it breathes that way. I have 3 male bettas in community tanks one shares with ember tetras another shares with glowlight tetras and some tiny spice rasboras and the other one is by himself at the moment not had him long.
The aggression could come from either the betta or gourami depending on. If you put two fish who are generally aggressive to fish in the same family like gouramis and bettas are then you will have a high chance of aggression going on. Otherwise you re looking as the probability of losing your other fish.
There another peaceful fish that loves the same tank setup as your betta.
